Week 12
This week I was put on a song last minute so that song was my main focus for the week due to the gig being next week. This was good and bad for me, this is due to added pressure that I went through because I had such little time to get the song ready but, it also prepares me for the real world where I will most likely have a shorter time frame to learn a song for something.
The song was "Half the World Away" by Oasis. The song is very dynamically challenging with parts that feel like they would need to get louder actually get softer and parts where it feels it should get softer gets louder instead. The drum pattern is also very simple and is a little bit difficult to play in time and keep in time along with trying too dynamic. The first time I played this song was with the band I am going to be on stage with. This run through was not the best but after that we went into a practice room and played the song over and over working things out and everyone was putting in their opinions out to help make the song the best that I can be in the short amount of time that we have. We managed to get the song to a good enough standard for the band and then once we got that done, we performed it in front of the class to get their feedback to make sure that it is actually good, the feedback that we got for the song was overall positive. there are a few things that we will need to work on like being more dynamic while we are playing so that the different section of the song can be differentiated between each other.
After I got that song down, I went over the song "Let's Get it on" because I have neglected to practice it for a few weeks. I was also told to use a Wah pedal to make the guitar sound "funkier" and more of an early 70s sound. The Wah pedal took a lot to get used to because of the fact have now have to more that move my hands and arms, I also cannot move as much as I would have liked to but with me using the pedal I more or less stuck into one place so I am having to work on my stage presence without being able to move. This was difficult because the main way I improve my stage presence is by moving about but I have discovered if I make the way I play "bigger" it has the same effect as if I were moving about on stage.
Once I had those down, I played through all of the songs that I am on stage so that I can get feedback and make any last-minute changes if needed so that if we need to make any last-minute changes we can and make the songs as good as we can.
These blogs are really useful at showing how I have improved and grown as a musician because at the start of the year I started to play drums, and you can see the progression that I have made through these blogs. At the first week I was only able to play a few simple drum beats but now I am constantly asked to fill in and play drums for people. Also, with these blogs it also allows me to keep up with how far I am into the course and how much time I have left to get all the stuff that I wanted to do done before the end of the year.
