Week 6 + Production blog 3
This week we held a meeting, and, in this meeting, we had a discussion on each other’s timeline and who it was the best for what reasons. Personally, I chose Leah's timeline as the best. It had everything needed in a neat and orderly fashion and it had a good colour scheme which allowed for people to read easily and it had all of the required for the document and more, in a lot of detail which tells anyone who is reading it, what they have to do, when they have to do it by and in what way they have to do it.
This meeting was led by Nils. He did a good job, but I feel like more communication between everyone would have been better for the meeting. The way he could do this is by picking out on people to give their opinions and then sparking a discussion from that. Since some of us had different answers to other people I would have Asked everyone what they liked about a design and what they did not like and then while they are doing that make a new one that with all the features required and that everyone liked.
After we finished this meeting, we got to practicing our songs. the songs that I practiced were: "Paranoid" (drums) by Black Sabbath, "She's Electric" (drums) by Oasis, "My Sharona" (Drums) by The Knack and Stacey's Mom (voice) by Fountains of Wayne.
We got Paranoid recorded, and we think the song is almost ready for the gig we just need to make sure we can clean it up and fine tune it to make it the best it possibly can. In the video we play well but I was playing a little loud and I was drowning out the bass and vocals, next time I will play a little lighter. The things that we will be fine tuning are the tones because they are good, but we feel like they could be better, we could add more distortion to the rhythm guitar and have a bit less on the lead guitar so we can clearly make out the solo. We also need to clean up the ending to make it a smoother finish because it is just an abrupt stop, and it does not sound very good so we will work on that so that we are happy with how it sounds. We will also work on adding in different fills between the various parts of the song such as, a drum fills between the verse and the pre-chorus. We also want to work on the timing to make sure that it is perfect and that none of us sway out of time. I will play to a click track for a while to help my build up muscle memory with the song so when I am playing the song it become second nature to play on the correct tempo.
We also got "She's Electric" recoded and this went just as well but it still needs a bit more work and more time put into it to make sure that it is up to the standard, we are happy with to perform it at the gig. Some things that we could work on ate the dynamics because the song felt a bit flat but with an hour or 2 of work you will be able to hear a clear difference in volume ion the different sections of the song, we will also need to work on the ending because its messy and with a bit of tidying up it will be a lot better. We showed the video to our class to get some feedback so that we could see where we needed to improve. We have been told we need a little more work on dynamics so that we can make sure that there is a clear distinction between the various parts of the song. We also need to tweak some tones because although they are good, they do not really fit the vibe of the song.
With the song "Stacy's Mom" we decided that I would play drums for the song instead of singing due to my voice just not being suited for the song. Originally, I knew the song but did not really know how the rhythm went on the drums. After listening to the song again I realised the drum pattern was a simple 4/4 drum beat which I can do easily. When in rehearsals with the band I found my band members seemed to struggle keeping in time with myself. To fix this we began to work on the song at a slower tempo and playing 1 at a time to my drum beat.
For "My Sharona" we managed to get the song recoded, but we are not happy with where it is at, and we will need to put more time into the song. We showed the video to my class for feedback, and they agreed that the song was not good enough to be played at the gig and needed a lot of work so that it can be played. We need to work on the dynamic and the rhythm and timing of the song. some more specific reasons why we will be cutting it is because it has a really long solo which also very difficult, the drum pattern is simple and fun but it is really easy to lose track of where you are in the song and then you could miss a fill or miss a change in the pattern for a different part of the song.
This week we held a meeting on timelines and marketing. Nils led the meeting this week. For this meeting we were in the igloo looking at everyone's timelines and marketing strategies and giving out our feedback on them.
Jayden's documents where first. Jayden's timeline was very bland, and it did not have a lot of information on. but it was very clear and concise, but more information would have been good to make it less vague on what we would be doing for that week.
Kaine had shown his documents after. There was a bit more vibrancy that the last document, but they were more or less the same this. It does not have a lot of detail but, it was concise and straight to the point but more info to make it less vague would have been better.
Leah's timeline was next. This timeline was really good it was clear and concise and there was enough information for it not to be considered as vague and the design was really good. The text was a little small and was difficult to read at times but besides that this was a really good timeline.
Ollie's timeline was next to be shown. This one was very basic and bland, but it had all the relevant information it needed. It also highlighted all of the weeks that we would not be at college and that practice would have been at home. More info in the form of specific deadlines would have been good to include as well to make sure that people are aware what document is due for when.
Nils's timeline was next, and this one was more or less the same as Ollie's where it was just a blank word document with the week down in a column with what we would be doing for that week. This would benefit from more information like Ollie's allowing people to know what is due for when on each week.
Next up was Harry's timeline. This one was really good, and it was set out in a graph with specific date of when each week would start. it also had a lot of information on and was very easy to understand. the colour scheme used was also good and it was not jarring to look at. Also, the weeks that we would not be in college and would have to practice at home were clearly marked out and easy to see.
My timeline was next up. The feedback I got was that it was clear and concise with a good colour scheme, but the writing was difficult to see because of how dark the timeline was. I also personally think I could have used more information in the timeline to make it easier to understand and it would have been good if I used date on there and not just weeks to help people gauge how far they are from the actual performance.
My timeline was the last to be shown and I believe either Leah's or Harry's where the best out of them all due to the information and the layouts that they used.
After we looked the timelines, we moved onto what types of market we would use. We decided that we would use a website as the main point of marketing and then we would also use social media as a form of marketing. these worked for us in previous years, and we know how to get them done easily and they do not cost a lot to do. We also considered doing a radio advertisement because of the connection to the radio that we have, and it would be a really good way to get people in the local area to hear about the gig and it would not cost us a lot because of the people we know that do the radio.
Overall, the meeting went really well and everything that we needed to discuss got discussed. Personally, I would've as each person go into their thought process on why they made their timelines the way they did, and I would also ask them individually what they though the best course would for a marketing strategy. Also, Nils lead the beginning of the meeting but around halfway through doing the timelines Jayden took over and they both did well collectively, and they got through the meeting really quickly and got all of the relevant thigs that needed to be spoke about done.
