Week 10

This week I practiced the song I felt like needed the most work done to them.

I started off with the song "She Bangs the Drum". I started off by playing a round of 16th notes and then moving into a regular rhythm to get myself used to the change of switching between the 2 different techniques of drumming. I did this by myself in one of the practice rooms.

After I finished doing this I began to practice with the band, we got a few run throughs, and we tweaked a few things but overall, the song is going well.

After this I worked on the song "She's Electric". This song has a steady beat, and it stays at the same tempo throughout the entire song, and it is difficult for me to consistently stay at that tempo without swaying. The way I practiced this is by playing to a metronome; I made sure to play the song to the tempo of the metronome and if I got it wrong, I would restart and keep playing until I got at least 5 run throughs of the song without going out of time. Once I did this I practiced with the band, and we got a few run-throughs in, but I realised that playing to a metronome is different to playing with a band and it made me mess up a few times. Overall, the song is going well we will just need to adjust some things and work on other parts. I did this so I could better learn the timing for the song so I can build up my muscle memory and play the song in tome without having to think too hard about it. Kaine did really well but he seemed to be struggling when he was playing and also singing at the same time with a bit more practice it will be easier for him to sing while also playing.

Once they were done, I played the songs I felt where in a good place with the bands. Then I moved onto some new songs that I have been asked to drum.

The first was "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash. This song has a strange but simple patter, the song only uses the kick drum and snare and the way you hit the snare is not normal.
You have to hit the snare on the rim to get a "clicky" sound. Once I got this pattern down it was easy for me to keep in time due to how the snare is played. There is not a lot I can do in the form of dynamics due to the sound that is produced from the snare. Overall, the song went very well. I did suggest that we change the tone on one of the guitars to make it more, blues like, so that we can get a sound that fits the song.

This is the drum tab for "Folsom Prison Blues It is 2/2 and is in 206bpm. The pattern once played sounds like a train chugging along. It gives the song a true blues feels.

The last song I practiced this week was "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks. The song has a really complicated drum pattern that is going to take a while to learn. There is a lot of kick drum parts while also doing a lot on the hi-hat and snare, along with the rest of the fills in the song. The first run through was very messy and uncoordinated. We discussed timing and tempo, along with tones and phrasing. I recommended that we go through each section of the song and pick out what we like and did not like so that we can improve the song. Overall, the song went poorly but can be improved on.
